Coastal Scents 22 Brush Set

During Black Friday, Coastal Scents had a sale where everything was 50% off! I couldn't resist a sale such as this.  I had been eying their 22 brush set for a long time.  The regular price is $34.95 and I thought that was cool for 22 brushes.  Other brush companies are charging higher prices for 12 brush sets **coughcoughSigmaandSedonaLacecoughcough** so to catch this sell was a big savings to me.  Even though I purchased the brushes during Black Friday, Coastal Scents quickly shipped it out to me.  That encourages me to want to buy more from them in the future.

The brushes come in a "pleather" case.  I'm not going to lie: when I took it out of the box, it smelled really bad.  I'm hoping the smell from the case will wear out soon. It has a little zipper compartment (and I do mean little) where you could put some of your makeup or other brushes. Before I actually used the brushes I washed them.  Out of 22 brushes, the only brush that shed while I washed them was the fan brush.  It was only two hairs so I'm not highly concerned right now.

I have been using these brushes since I got them and I love them! Most of the brushes in my collection so far are ELF brushes so that's the only thing I could really compare them to (I have like three brushes from Essence of Beauty).  In comparison to the ELF brushes, the Coastal Scents brushes are better to me.  Especially the eye brushes.  Don't get me wrong, there is still a place for my ELF brushes in my heart.  I still will use them and I think they are great starter brushes for $1 to $3 dollars each.  However, for me, this brush set is an upgrade.  The ferrules are glued on strong and the handles are long which allows me to control the brush better.  The only thing I didn't like about this brush set (other than the smell) is that the names of the brushes aren't on the handle but that is a minor thing.

The handles are glossy and smooth but they don't have any numbers or names on them to tell you what type of brush it is.

Fan (Synthetic) and Powder Buffer (Synthetic) Brushes

Round Powder (Synthetic) and Flat Stippling (Synthetic) Brushes

Angle Blush (Goat) and Foundation (Fiber) Brushes

Large Shadow (Pony) and Concealer (Nylon) Brushes

Detail Concealer (Fiber) and Blender (Pony) Brushes

Medium Shadow (Pony) and Doe Foot Blender (Pony) Brushes

Pointed Blender (Pony) and Dome Shadow (Pony) Brushes

Brow (Pony), Dome Blender (Pony), Detail Shadow (Pony), Lip (Pony), and Smudger Sponge (Rubber) Brushes

Large, Medium, and Small Liner/Brow (Nylon) Brushes

My favorite face brushes are the Powder Buffer and the Flat Stippling brushes. My favorite eye brush is the Doe Foot Blender.  However, all of the brushes perform well.  The brushes have a range of materials such as synthetic, goat, pony, nylon, fiber, and rubber.

Using these brushes will make makeup time more enjoyable.  I'm glad I purchased these.  If you have this set, let me know in the comments section if you like it.  If you want to check them out, click here.  If you have another brush set, tell me the name of it, how many brushes come with the set and if you like it or not.

Yours truly,

Coily

  2. I named each brush in the captions of the pictures. I am not a professional makeup artist but I will share with you what I would use each one for:

Fan: I would use this to sweep away any eyeshadow fall out in case I used too much eyeshadow and it got all over my face. Or, I would use this for a little sweep of blush on my cheeks if I didn’t want to use a lot of blush.

Powder Buffer: You could use this brush for powders like blush, powder foundation or translucent/setting powers. However, I love to use this brush for liquid foundation. It applies the foundation smoothly like an airbrush finish. I would use this brush in a stippling manner (almost like stamping your face with it all over until your foundation is all over the areas you want to cover.)

Round Powder: You could use this in the same manner I described for the Powder Buffer.
Flat Stippling: You could use this in the same manner I described for the Powder Buffer. I love to use this brush for blush though.

Angle Blush: I use this brush to contour my face with bronzer. I usually contour my temples, my chin, and my cheekbones. I accurately contour my cheekbones, I make a fishy face by sucking in my lips. Then I apply the bronzer with this brush in the “gap” area on my cheeks.

Foundation: You can use this brush to apply liquid foundation. Proceed with caution though while using this brush because these type of brushes (no matter what brand) tends to apply the foundation in a streaky manner. You must really take your time and do small sections until you complete your whole face if you use this brush. You can also use this for applying moisturizer or primer. You decide.

Large Shadow: This brush is best for applying eyeshadow on your lid area. This brush is big so if you have smaller eyes this might not work for you.

Concealer: You can apply concealer to your face with this brush to hide maybe dark under eye areas or hyperpigmentation left from acne.
Detail Concealer: I would use this the same way as the concealer brush. Also, since this one is smaller than the Concealer brush, you could use this to apply eyeshadow primer or a base (like a MAC Paint Pot or a NYX Jumbo Pencil).

Blender: With blender brushes, technically you are supposed to use them to blend the colors together that you have applied with other brushes. However, I like to use this brush to apply colors to my lids because the Large Shadow brush is well..large and this brush is sort of shaped like it, but smaller.

Medium Shadow: You can also use this to apply eyeshadow to your lid. This brush is smaller than the Blender brush.

Doe Foot Blender: I love to use this brush to apply my crease colors.

Pointed Blender: I love to use this brush on my outer V area to contour darker eyeshadow colors.

Dome Shadow: I actually use this brush more so for blending the colors together but I guess it would be good for applying shadow into your crease area as well.

Brow: This brush is good if you want precision in your color placement. You could use it to apply your highlight color under your eye brow or maybe under your waterline.

Dome Blender: This is another brush to blend the colors together.

Detail Shadow: This brush is little so you can add fine details without messing up. It would be perfect if you wanted to add a pop of color in your inner V section (near your nose).
Lip: The lip brush is for applying lipstick or lipgloss.

Smudger Sponge: This sponge is perfect if you want to do a smoky look. Just take it and literally smudge the contour color you applied to smoke it out.

Large, Medium, and Small Liner: These brushes are good for filling in your eyebrows or applying gel liner.

I hope all of this helps you. Also, I do have a video about these brushes on my YouTube channel: ColorsAndCoils. Enjoy your brushes and makeup!
