Various Types of Planners

planner

There are tons of different types of planners. I love that you can find or create a planner that works best for your lifestyle. In this post, I will share the various types and a few brands that I am aware of. I am not affiliated with any of the brands listed below.

Wirebound/Coils

These planners have pages that are kept together with a wire or plastic coil on the left side. In these type of planners, you cannot move pages around. If you would like to remove a page, you have to rip it out and the pages will have frayed edges. People who like wirebound planners love that you can fold back one side of the planner to give themselves more room to write. Some of the brands that I am aware of include:

Also, some brands make covers that you can slide a wirebound planner in like Coach

Ringbound

Ringbound planners are binders and my favorite type of planner. If you wanted to you could use a standard sized three ring binder that holds letter size paper (that people use for work/school). However, that would be too big to carry around. There are brands that offer smaller sized 6 or 7 ringed binders in various sizes. The size names vary throughout the different brands. However, some are small enough to fit in your pocket. Some hold 3.75 x 6.75 inch paper and some hold A5 sized paper. People who love ringbound planners love that they are customizable. You can purchase a hole punch for your pages, meaning you can put whatever you want inside in the order you prefer. You cannot bend back most ringbound planners to focus on one page. However, if the rings are in your way while writing, you can take the page out and put it back when you are done. Ringbound planners can be made out of plastic, leather and other types of fabric. There are different styles that close by snaps, zippers, magnets, or elastic straps. These type of planners also usually come with pen loops so your writing utensil is just a few inches away from you hand at all times. Also, many brands include wallet slots inside your wallet and plastic holders for business cards. So, your planner can also hold your money if you want it to.  Some of the brands I am familiar with include:

Discbound

At the Staples office supply store, they sell something they called the Arc Discbound system. (Martha Stewart also has her own line of discbound notebooks at Staples.) Basically, you can choose from various sizes of disc to keep your pages together. It sort of is like a wirebound planner. The disc allows you to bend the planner back so you can focus on one page. However, unlike a wirebound planner, the papers are removable. You can snap pages in and out and purchase a punch to put any piece of paper in your planner you want in any order you want. This allows you to have the benefits of a wire and ring bound planner in one.

Midori Travelers Notebook

If you have ever seen the movie Indiana Jones, then you might be familiar with this type of planner. A Midori is a leather book that has elastic in the middle. This elastic allows you to slide in any type of booklet that is glued, sewn, or stapled together. They also have elastic straps or a cord to tie it close. If you want the pages in your booklet to be in a particular order, you may have to make your own custom booklet and staple it together. Midori Travelers come in various sizes. A popular size is the passport size so you can take it with you wherever you go. A Midori may be perfect for you if you love Moleskine notebooks.
