4 Years Post Relaxer Update

I know, I know, I know...I am behind in blogging. However I did make a video showing my updated hair journey since walking away from the creamy crack (a.k.a. chemical hair relaxers). Click here to see the video on my YouTube channel. It has been four years since my last relaxer on August 16, 2010. I transitioned until I clipped all the relaxed ends off and here I am today:

I happy that I achieved my original hair goal. I wanted my hair to be as long as it was when I was a little girl before I ever had a relaxer. I believe I am there. The only difference I see in my older pictures vs today is that back in the day when I had pigtails all my hair was one even length except for bangs. Today, my hair is in layers. (I believe that is because I before I transitioned my hair was badly damaged in weird layers that I did not cut them into.  I never corrected the funky layers.) That is why in the above picture my hair sort of looks thinner at the ends. I need to grow those layers out. Now that I have reached my original goal I am not done. I want to grow my hair even longer. Here is my new plan:

  • Grow all layers of my hair to full armpit length (APL).
  • Once all of my hair is APL I will cut it even. I will be done with layers and bangs. I am not saying never ever again in the far future. However, in the near future I want my hair all one solid length.
  • I will never ever cut my hair shorter than APL ever. I plan on loving my hair so it does not get damaged to the point where somehow it gets shorter.
  • Once I am full APL, I will continue to let my hair grow. I definitely would like to see what my hair looks like at bra strap length. Maybe even waist length for kicks and giggles. I will call this hair "bonus hair." If I am tired of "bonus hair" the shortest I will cut is...come on, guess! APL!
  • I think I need to step it up. I've seen other people's fourth year reveals and their hair was longer than mine. So I am considering trying hair vitamins. Also, I am curious if my iron levels are contributing to my hair length after watching SistaWith RealHair's videos on YouTube. I know once I was almost rejected from donating blood to the Red Cross because my iron levels were low. Also, I can tell from MyFitnessPal that I am not getting the recommended daily amount of iron in my diet. So, I should research iron filled foods to eat.
  • And last but not least: Enjoy my hair. I love the versatility of natural hair. I can be coily, curly, or straight. I like change every now and then with styles and being natural allows me to switch it up. I am not really into changing my hair color unless I do so with weave.  I actually like my natural hair color. I tried on a blonde wig before and let's just say Jesus knew what He was doing, ha ha! Although, I am starting to get grey hairs. In the future, I need to consider what I am going to do: leave it alone, use a rinse, or use permanent color. I think right now permanent color is scaring me because I don't want to damage my hair. I've seen people dye their hair and they have to moisturize it more than usual. At the moment, I am just going to leave it alone. If I do something to it, I'll definitely blog about it.
